Applying for voluntary insurance

You are going to live or work outside the Netherlands

You can apply for voluntary insurance no earlier than 2 months before and no later than 12 months after you start living or working outside the Netherlands.

There are different ways to request an offer for voluntary insurance. It will take you about 10 minutes to make a request.

On your application, you must state your income for the period between the date you leave the Netherlands and the end of the year. Always state your income in euros.

  1. Online via My SVB

    Log in to My SVB. Select ‘Make a claim/application’ and ‘Voluntary insurance (if you leave the Netherlands)’. The form will appear on your screen. Unfortunately, the form is only available in Dutch.

  2. Fill in, print and send the form

    First, fill in the form on your screen, then print and sign it. Send it to us by post. Our address is stated on the form.

    It will take around 8 weeks before we can send you our decision.

    The date on which we receive your application counts as the date of your application.

  3. Using a paper form

    If you prefer to use a paper form to request an offer, you can download and print the ‘Application form for voluntary AOW and Anw Insurance’. Fill in the form and send it to us by post. Our address is stated on the form.

    It will take around 8 weeks before we can send you our decision.

    The date on which we receive your application counts as the date of your application.

You are going to live or work in the Netherlands

You can apply for voluntary insurance up to 10 years after the date you first became insured under the AOW pension scheme.

There are different ways to request an offer for voluntary AOW insurance. It will take you about 10 minutes to make a request.

    Log in to My SVB. Select ‘Make a claim/application’ and ‘Voluntary insurance (for newcomers to the Netherlands)’. The form will appear on your screen. Unfortunately, the form is only available in Dutch.

  2. Fill in, print and send the form

    First, fill in the form on your screen, then print and sign it. Send it to us by post. Our address is stated on the form.

    It will take around 8 weeks before we can send you our decision.

    The date on which we receive your application is regarded as the date of your application.

  3. Using a paper form

    If you prefer to use a paper form to request an offer, you can download and print the form for buying back AOW insurance (‘Aanvraag inkoop vrijwillige verzekering AOW’ – only in Dutch). Fill in the form and send it to us by post. Our address is stated on the form.
