If you are sent to prison

If you are sent to prison, a detention centre or a closed treatment facility, find out what you have to do for your health insurance.

  1. Inform your Dutch health insurer

Let your health insurer know that you are in prison, a detention centre or a closed treatment facility. Your health insurer will decide whether or not your health insurance can be suspended. If so, you will not have to pay health insurance contributions during your time in prison. Instead, you will be insured by the government.

  2. If you have been released from prison

Let your health insurer know that you are no longer in prison. You will start paying health insurance contributions again as soon as you are released.
