Period of stay outside the Netherlands

If you get an AIO supplement, there are rules for if you want to go on holiday. It is important for you to know what these rules are because if you stay outside the Netherlands for too long, your AIO supplement will stop. You will only be able to apply for a new AIO supplement after you return to the Netherlands.

If your partner stays outside the Netherlands for too long, your AIO supplement may stop or go down.

How many weeks can you stay outside the Netherlands?

If you get an AIO supplement, you can stay outside the Netherlands for a maximum of 13 weeks per year (from 1 January to 31 December).

You do not need to inform us of every stay. You only need to inform us if you stay outside the Netherlands for longer than 91 days (13 weeks) in total over the course of 1 year.

If you have a partner who has reached their AOW pension age, the same applies. If you have a partner who has not yet reached their AOW pension age, your partner only needs to inform us if they stay outside the Netherlands for longer than 28 days (4 weeks) over the course of 1 year.

If you stay outside the Netherlands for longer than 13 weeks and your stay starts in one calendar year and ends in the next, your AIO supplement will also stop.

It is advisable for you to arrange for someone to open your post for you, so you will stay updated about what may be important and what we expect from you.

We check to see what assets you have

Every year in May, we will send you a letter explaining the rules if you want to spend time in another country. We also explain that we will check whether you have any assets, including any properties or land outside the Netherlands. We may ask you to fill in a separate form about this.
