Period of stay outside the Netherlands
If you get an AIO supplement, there are rules for how long you can stay outside the Netherlands. It is important for you to know these rules. If you stay outside the Netherlands too long, your AIO supplement will stop. You will only be able to apply for a new AIO supplement after you return to the Netherlands.
If your partner stays outside the Netherlands too long, the amount of your AIO supplement can go down.
How many weeks can you stay outside the Netherlands?
If you get an AIO supplement, you can stay outside the Netherlands for a maximum of 13 weeks per year (from 1 January to 31 December). All the days you spend outside the Netherlands in a year are added together.
If you stay outside the Netherlands for longer than 13 weeks, your AIO supplement will stop, also if your stay outside the Netherlands starts in one year and ends in the next.
If you have a partner who also receives an AOW pension, your partner can stay outside the Netherlands for a maximum of 13 weeks per year. If your partner is under AOW pension age, the maximum is 4 weeks per year.
Report a stay outside the Netherlands
You must tell us that you are going to stay outside the Netherlands before you leave. This also applies to your partner.

We check to see what assets you have
Every year in May, we will send you a letter explaining the rules if you want to spend time in another country. We also explain that we check whether you have any assets, including any houses or land outside the Netherlands. We may ask you to fill in a separate form about this.
