What happens to the child benefit if a parent or child dies

If a parent has died

If you get child benefit and your partner dies, you will simply continue to get child benefit. If the parent who died received the child benefit, and you looked after the children together, we will see whether the child benefit can be paid to you. We will send you a claim form for that purpose. If the person who died was the only person who looked after the child, the child benefit will stop after the quarter in which the person died. If the children are taken in by a relative, for example, we will see whether child benefit can be paid to the relative. We will send the relative a claim form for that purpose.

If your child has died

If your child has died, the child benefit will stop after the quarter in which your child died. We will send you a letter about this. If you receive child benefit for other children, the letter will also inform you of the amount you will receive as from the next quarter.
