Child benefit

If you have adopted a child

Child benefit for a child you adopt in the Netherlands

If you adopt a child who is already living in the Netherlands, we will not be informed of this automatically by the municipal authorities. Instead, you should contact us yourself so that we can send you a child benefit claim form.

Child benefit for a child you adopt outside the Netherlands

If you adopt a child from outside the Netherlands, we will check whether the adoption has taken place in accordance with the rules of the Hague Adoption Convention.

  • If you adopt a child via an accredited adoption agency which has a licence from the government, you will receive a certificate from the adoption agency showing that the adoption has taken place in accordance with the Hague Adoption Convention. You will then be entitled to child benefit.
  • If you adopt a child via an agency that is not recognized by the government, we will investigate whether the adoption has taken place in accordance with the rules of the Hague Adoption Convention. If so, you will be entitled to child benefit.
If the adoption has not taken place in compliance with the Hague Adoption Convention, we will investigate the rules for adoption in the country where the child is from and determine whether the adoption can be recognized. If so, you willl be entitled to child benefit.

Child benefit for an adopted child who is still living outside the Netherlands

You can get child benefit for a child who is temporarily still living outside the Netherlands, provided the following conditions are met:

  • The Netherlands has an agreement on the verification of entitlements with the country where the child is living, and
  • you pay at least € 425 per quarter towards the child's support, and
  • the child comes to live with you within 6 months.
If it takes more than six months before the child can come to live with you, you may still be able to get child benefit. Contact your SVB office about this.
You can also contact us to find out whether there is a verification agreement with the country where the child is living.

Child benefit before adoption?

If you have been allocated a child but he or she has not yet been registered as your child with your municipal authorities,  you may already be able to get child benefit. Contact your SVB office about this.
