AOW pension

Someone has died

What to do if an AOW pensioner dies

If someone who receives an AOW pension dies, we have to stop the pension. The AOW pension, AOW top-up and holiday allowance end on the day following the date of death.

If the pensioner who died lived in the Netherlands, you must inform the municipal authorities of the death. They will then inform us, and we will automatically send a claim form for Anw survivor benefit.

If the pensioner who died lived outside the Netherlands, you must report the death directly to us, enclosing a copy of the death certificate.

If the pensioner who died was single

If the pensioner who died was single, we will pay the holiday allowance payable from May until the date of death into the deceased pensioner's account. If AOW pension and top-up have already been paid for the whole month, a certain amount will have been overpaid. In that case, we will deduct the amount overpaid from the holiday allowance. In some cases, a small amount still has to be repaid by the survivors.

If the pensioner who died was living with someone

If the deceased is survived by a partner, a death grant will be paid to the partner. The unpaid holiday allowance will be paid into the deceased pensioner's account.

If AOW pension and AOW top-up are overpaid following the death, we will deduct the amount overpaid from the holiday allowance and the death grant.

If the deceased had a partner who did not yet recieve an AOW pension, the partner may qualify for a survivor benefit, provided he or she looks after a child under 18 or is more than 45 percent incapacitated for work.

If the pensioner who died had a partner who receives an AOW pension, the partner will receive a pension at the higher rate for a person living alone as from the month in which the pensioner died.

What is a death grant?

The death grant consists of the gross amount of AOW pension for one month, and is payable to:

  • the surviving partner, or, if there is no surviving partner,
  • children of the deceased who are under 18, or, if there are no children under 18,
  • someone who was living with the deceased in the same house until the date of death.

As partners are listed in our records, the death grant should be paid out without delay. If you have not received a death grant but think that you are entitled to one, please get in touch with us. The death grant must be applied for within one year of the date on which the pensioner died.
