Read the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about the Message Box

Below, you can read the most frequently asked questions concerning the Message Box (your personal postbox at MijnOverheid).

Log in to MijnOverheid with your DigiD to see if you have a Message Box. It is possible that someone else activated a Message Box for you at some time in the past.

When you activate your account at MijnOverheid, you can enter your email address. You will then receive an email whenever a new message is sent to your Message Box

If you have not given your email address, or if you want to change your email address, go to MijnOverheid.nl and log in with your DigiD. Select ‘Instellingen’ to give your email address. If you want us to send you a reminder if you still haven’t read a new message within 3 weeks, you can ask us to do that too.

If you do not have an email address, you will have to keep checking your Message Box yourself to see whether there are any new messages and make sure you don’t miss anything important.

Log in at MijnOverheid with your DigiD.

Click on ‘Instellingen’, ‘Organisaties Berichtenbox and ‘Landelijke organisaties’. Then untick the box for the SVB and click on ‘Bewaren’.

No, if you open a Message Box, we will no longer send letters by post, except for letters that have not yet been adapted for the Message box or that we are not allowed to send to your Message Box. The following letters will not be sent to a Message Box:

  • Forms that need to be completed. Some forms are now being adapted for the Message Box, for example, the domestic situation form and the income details form
  • Letters and forms from the Personal Care Budget Department (PGB)
  • Confirmation of a change of correspondence address
  • Letters to a client's heirs about the end of a pension or benefit
  • Letters to clients who have been placed under administration/guardianship
  • Letters concerning review or appeal cases in which the client is represented by someone else.
  • Letters to third parties, for example, the client's representative or creditor

Unfortunately not. We are not allowed to send personal information by email because we cannot be sure who will receive the email. If you activate your account at MijnOverheid, you can choose to receive an email if a new message has been sent to your Message Box. This email will only state which organisation sent the message; it will not contain any personal information.

Yes, after you open a letter in the Message Box, you can print it. You will need a PDF reader for this.

Letters you receive in your Message Box will be saved there permanently, unless you delete them yourself. You can also save letters on your own computer as PDF files. You will need a PDF reader for this.

The Message Box service cannot be terminated. Every Dutch national aged 14 or over will have an account at MijnOverheid. This account cannot be terminated.

However, if you do not want to receive letters in your Message Box from certain organisations, you can de-select them. The only organisation that cannot be de-selected is the Tax and Customs Administration (Belastingdienst). They will continue to send their post to your Message Box.

If you no longer want to receive post from the SVB in your Message Box, log in to MijnOverheid using your DigiD. Click on ‘Instellingen’, ‘Organisaties Berichtenbox and ‘Landelijke organisaties’. Then untick the box for the SVB and click on ‘Bewaren’.

No, by activating your Message Box, you accept the services that are offered. If a new message is received in your Message Box, you will be sent an automatic email by MijnOverheid informing you which organisation has sent the message.

If you click on the blue button ‘Instellingen’, and then on ‘Organisaties Berichtenbox’, you can see which organisations will send letters digitally.

If you have already activated your Message Box, for example, to receive letters from the Belastingdienst, you will find our annual statement in your Message Box

When you activate your Message Box, you will receive letters not only from the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration (Belastingdienst) but from any other organisations that are ticked, including the SVB. If you want, you can untick any or all of these organisations except the Belastingdienst.
