Can I get income support from Germany
A large number of independent entrepreneurs may face financial problems due to loss of income as a result of the coronavirus measures. The German government has created a support package for self-employed persons which includes income support. How this works is explained below.
Arbeitslosengeld II (unemployment benefit)
If you have been losing income and turnover due to the coronavirus measures, you can get Arbeitslosengeld II if:
- you are aged 16 or over but have not yet reached your German old age pension age (your ‘Regelaltersrente’ will start between your 65th and 67th birthdays, depending on your year of birth), and
- you are fit for work (are able to work at least 3 hours a day).
If you apply for Arbeitslosengeld II between 1 March and 30 June 2020, your assets will not be taken into account for the first 6 months if they are under a certain limit. During the first 6 months, your benefit will be based on the actual amount you pay for rent and heating (instead of on a ‘reasonable amount’).
