AIO supplement - You are going to get married or start living with someone

AIO supplement

You are going to get married or start living with someone

A person who is married or living with someone is entitled to a different amount of AOW pension and income support than a person who is single. Therefore, if you get married or start living with someone, the amount of your AOW pension and AIO supplement will change.

Marriage, living with a partner, or registered partnership

We do not distinguish between marriage, registered partnership and living with a partner.

What we mean by 'living with a partner'

The SVB will consider you to be living with a partner if:
  • you live in the same house with someone who is 18 or older, and you
  • share the household costs or
  • look after each other
We refer to the person you share a house with as your "partner". This could be your husband, wife or friend, or a brother, sister, or grandchild.

When are you not considered to be living with a partner?

The SVB will not consider you to be living with a partner if you:

  • live in the same house with your own child aged 18 or over
  • live in the same house with your grandchild who is under 18
  • rent out a room to someone

Other income will affect your income support

If you get married or start living with a partner, you will get an AIO supplement at the rate for a married person. If you also get AOW pension, you will get a pension at the rate for a married person. If your partner is under 65, you can get a supplementary allowance for him or her.

Further, the minimum income for married persons will apply to you. This means that you can only receive an AIO supplement as long as your and your partner's joint income stays below € 1,342.07 net per month.
