Voluntary insurance
How much AOW pension will you get?
The amount of your AOW pension depends on:
- the number of years you have been insured under the AOW scheme, and
- whether you live alone or with someone else.
Most people will be insured under the AOW scheme automatically
The AOW scheme is an insurance scheme. Everyone who lives or works in the Netherlands is insured automatically, regardless of nationality. For every year that you are insured, you build up rights to 2% of the full AOW pension. If you have been insured from your 15th to your 65th birthday, you will get a full AOW pension.
Exceptions
If you have lived or worked outside the Netherlands, you may have been uninsured during certain periods, and you may get a lower pension as a result. Also, a small number of people who do live in the Netherlands are not insured under the AOW scheme. You can find information about this on the page entitled "Who is insured?"
Do you live alone or with others?
The type of AOW pension you will get also depends on your domestic situation. By domestic situation, we mean whether you live alone or with someone else.
- People who live alone are entitled to an AOW pension based on 70% of the net minimum wage.
- People who are married or living with a partner are both entitled to a pension based on 50% of the net minimum wage. Together they can receive up to 100% of the net minimum wage.
If you have a partner under 65, you may get a supplementary allowance on top of your AOW pension. A supplementary allowance is payable until your partner reaches the age of 65.
Many people have another pension in addition to an AOW pension. For example, a company pension or a private pension.
Our definition of 'partner'
By partner, we mean the person with whom you share the household costs. This could be your husband or wife, but also a friend, a brother or sister, or even a grandchild.Calculate your AOW pension
