Child benefit - Someone has died

Child benefit

Someone has died

The person who died lived in the Netherlands

If the person who died lived in the Netherlands, you do not have to report the death to us. After you report the death to the municipal authorities (gemeente), they will inform us.

The person who died lived outside the Netherlands

If the person who died lived outside the Netherlands, you do have to report the death to us. We will then contact the survivors.

What happens to the child benefit when a beneficiary dies

If a parent has died

If you get child benefit and your partner dies, you will simply continue to get child benefit. If the parent who died received the child benefit, and you looked after the children together, we will see whether the child benefit can be paid to you. We will send you a claim form for that purpose.

If the person who died was the only person who looked after the child, the child benefit will stop after the quarter in which the person died. If the children are taken in by a relative, for example, we will see whether child benefit can be paid to the relative. We will send the relative a claim form for that purpose.

If your child has died

If your child has died, the child benefit will stop after the quarter in which your child died. We will send you a letter stating on what date the child benefit stops. If you get child benefit for more than one child, we will send you a letter informing you about the adjusted amount that you will receive with effect from the next quarter.
