Child benefit
Exemption from compulsory insurance
The Netherlands has four national insurance schemes:
- child benefit (AKW)
- old age pension (AOW)
- survivor benefits Anw, and
- the National Act on Exceptional Medical Expenses (AWBZ)
As a rule, everyone who lives in the Netherlands is insured under these national insurance schemes. If you receive wages or a benefit, you will pay national insurance contributions.
Under certain conditions, you can apply for exemption from compulsory insurance. You will then not have to pay national insurance contributions and you will no longer be covered under the national insurance schemes. The following situations may apply.
1. You are covered under the national health insurance scheme of another EU, EEA or treaty country.
You can request a certificate of non-insurance under the AWBZ scheme
