BBZ

Dutch Health Insurance Act (Zvw)

If you live in Belgium and work in the Netherlands, you will be covered for health care in the Netherlands under the Health Insurance Act (Zvw) and the Exceptional Medical Expenses Act (AWBZ). You can register with a health insurer of your choice in the Netherlands. You will get a care policy, which is also proof of registration.

Contributions (2012)

In the Netherlands, you pay a health insurance contribution (Zvw) and a contribution for exceptional medical expenses (AWBZ). Your employer will pay a 7.10% health insurance contribution for you, and a contribution of 12.15% will be deducted from your pay for AWBZ insurance. The maximum amount on which this contribution is deducted is € 33,863 per year for people under 65 and people aged 65 who were born in 1946, or € 34,055 per year for employed people aged 65 and over who were born in or before 1945.

In addition, you will pay around € 1,291 per year in contributions to your health insurer. You have a compulsory policy excess of € 220. You can, however, opt for a higher policy excess.

What health care is covered?

You can get (partial) reimbursement for the following:

  • care by a G.P.
  • paramedic care, such as physiotherapy
  • a stay in hospital
  • specialist care
  • medicines
  • medical transportation
  • medical aids
  • obstetric help, maternity care
  • dental care (up to 22 years)

You will have to pay a personal contribution for maternity care, some types of medicines, aids and medical transport.
