National Act on Exceptional Medical Expenses (AWBZ)

If you live or work in the Netherlands, you will be insured under the National Act on Exceptional Medical Expenses (AWBZ). This scheme provides reimbursement for care that is not covered by your regular health insurance, e.g. home care or admission to a nursing home.

If your family members live in Belgium, they will not get reimbursement for care under the AWBZ scheme unless they are insured through your Dutch health insurance. They will then have to receive health care in the Netherlands.

Extra payment

If you are 18 or over and you receive care under the AWBZ scheme, you will usually have to pay a personal contribution. The amount you pay depends on your situation and the type of care you need.

How to claim care under the AWBZ scheme

If you need care under the AWBZ scheme, you should first contact your care administration office. They will look into your precise requirements. You can obtain their address from your health insurer.
