Your health insurance in the Netherlands
If you work in the Netherlands
If you live in Belgium and work in the Netherlands, you will be covered under Dutch health insurance. You must therefore register with a Dutch health insurer. You will pay an average of € 1,291 a year in health insurance contributions. The precise amount depends on the health insurer you choose and the policy excess you opt for. Everyone has a compulsory excess of € 220 a year. In addition, you pay contributions under the Dutch Health Insurance Act amounting to 7.10% on income up to € 50,064 a year (which will be reimbursed by your employer) and AWBZ contributions of 12.15% on income up to € 33,863 per year if you are under 65 or if you are 65 and were born in 1946, or € 34,055 per year if you are an employee aged 65 or over and you were born in or before 1945.
In some cases, you can get a healthcare allowance from the Dutch Tax Administration (Belastingdienst) to help cover the cost of the contribution.
You will normally receive medical care from the country where you live, in your case, Belgium. However, you can also opt for care in the Netherlands. You can get reimbursement for this care in two different ways:
- Through your Dutch health insurer
- Directly in Belgium. For this, you need to register with a Belgian health insurance fund using form E106, which you can obtain from your Dutch health insurer. In addition, you can take out supplementary hospitalization insurance to reduce the costs in the event of admission to hospital.
If you receive a Dutch pension or benefit
You will be covered under health insurance in the Netherlands. You must register with a Belgian health insurance fund using form E121, which you can obtain from the Dutch Health Care Insurance Board (College voor Zorgverzekeringen).
You can receive medical care in Belgium. The health insurance fund will reimburse the costs according to the rates applicable in Belgium. The health insurance fund will then be reimbursed by the Netherlands.
You can also receive medical care in the Netherlands. You do not need permission from the Belgian health insurance fund for this. The costs of care will be reimbursed by Agis Zorgverzekeringen. As from 1 January 2012, you can use the European Health Insurance Card - EHIC - to receive care in the Netherlands. With this card, the care provider can settle the costs of treatment directly with Agis. You can obtain the card from the Care Insurance Board.
You will find more information under the link "If you receive a Dutch benefit or pension".
