If you work in the Netherlands

If you live in Belgium and work exclusively in the Netherlands, you will be covered under Dutch health insurance. You should therefore register with a Dutch health insurer. In the Netherlands, you will pay an average of € 1,258 per year in contributions to your health insurer. The precise amount depends on the health insurer you choose.

In some cases, you can get a health care allowance from the Dutch Tax Administration (Belastingdienst) to help cover the cost of the contribution.

Medical care in Belgium

You can receive medical care in Belgium. You can get reimbursement for this care in two different ways:

  • through your Dutch health insurer; or
  • through a health insurance fund in Belgium. In this case, you must register with a health insurance fund using an S1 form (which replaces the E106 form), which you can obtain from your Dutch health insurer. You will have to pay a contribution of around € 50 a year. Your health insurance fund will normally reimburse you for 75% of your expenses, which means that you have to pay a personal contribution of 25%. You can take out supplementary hospitalization insurance to reduce the costs in the event of admission to hospital.

Medical care in the Netherlands

You can also choose to receive medical care in the Netherlands. In that case, you have to claim your expenses from your Dutch health insurer.
