BBZ - What if you become ill?

BBZ

If you fall ill

The Netherlands

If you work in the Netherlands and you fall ill, your employer will continue to pay 70% of your wages (calculated on wages up to €191.82 a day) for up to 2 years. If you worked full-time, you will get at least the minimum wage of € 1,446.60 a month during the first year. If you worked fewer hours, you will get a lower amount. The employer can also pay you more than 70% if this was agreed as part of your employment contract or a collective agreement (CAO).

If you are a temporary or standby employee and you fall ill, you will get a sickness benefit from the Institute for Employee Benefit Schemes (UWV). How much you will get depends on your last wages.

Ill for more than 2 years

If you have been ill for more than 2 years, you can get an incapacity benefit from the UWV if your degree of incapacity for work is 35% or more. The UWV pays two types of benefit:

  • IVA benefit: a benefit for people who are unable to earn at least 20% of their last wages and whose chances of recovery are slim;
  • WGA benefit: a benefit for people who can still work part-time but who are unable to earn more than 65% of their last wages. In many cases, you can get an unemployment benefit in addition to the WGA benefit.

Belgium

If you work in Belgium and you fall ill, your employer will continue to pay your net wages for one month. After this month, for the next 11 months of your illness, you will receive a benefit via the Belgian health insurance fund.

Ill for more than a year

If you have been ill for a year, you will get an incapacity benefit if your degree of incapacity for work is 66% or more. If your illness has been caused by an accident at work, you will get a benefit from the industrial accident insurance company.
