Working in Belgium as a self-employed person

If you are self-employed in Belgium, you will be insured in Belgium for:
  • a one-off birth or adoption grant;
  • child benefit;
  • medical care;
  • informal care (e.g. by relatives), professional home care, and residential care;
  • income during sickness and incapacity for work;
  • old age pension;
  • survivor benefit;
  • banktuptcy.

Arranging your health insurance

  • Register with a Social Insurance Fund for the Self-employed of your choice.
  • Register with a health insurance fund of your choice. You will then be insured against major risks, such as the cost of hospitalisation. To be insured against smaller risks, such as the cost of medicines and visists to your doctor, you can take out supplementary health insurance.

The amount of the contribution

As a self-employed person, you are obliged to pay social insurance contributions to the Social Insurance Fund of your choice. Contributions are paid per quarter. The amount you have to pay depends on your income.

Minimum contribution per quarter
1st year€ 621.65
2nd year€ 636.81
3rd year€ 651.97
As from the 4th full calendar year€ 667.14

The maximum contribution is € 3,759.12.

A secondary job

If you are self-employed in Belgium and also work in paid employment in Belgium, you will be insured as an employee for the hours you work in paid employment.

If you live in the Netherlands and work in paid employment in the Netherlands in addition to being self-employed in Belgium, you will be covered under social insurance in the Netherlands and in Belgium. In this situation, it may be possible for you to register with a Social Insurance Fund for Part-time Self-employed persons. You will then pay less in contributions, but you will also have reduced benefit entitlements. You can find more information about this on the website of the RSVZ.
