Contributions and entitlement to pensions/benefits

If you are employed in the Netherlands, you can qualify for a benefit or pension if you fall ill, become unemployed or retire. If you are self-employed in the Netherlands, you can take out private insurance for sickness and unemployment.

Payment of contributions in the Netherlands

If you are employed in the Netherlands, you and your employer will pay social insurance contributions to the Tax Administration (Belastingdienst) for: 

  • unemployment insurance 
  • health insurance 
  • insurance under the National Act on Exceptional Medical Expenses (AWBZ
  • incapacity insurance under the WAO and WIA schemes 
  • survivor benefit insurance under the National Survivor Benefits Act (Anw) 
  • old age pension insurance under the National Old Age Pensions Act (AOW)

If you are self-employed, you will pay social insurance contributions to the Tax Administration (Belastingdienst) for:

  • health insurance 
  • insurance under the National Act on Exceptional Medical Expenses (AWBZ) 
  • survivor benefit insurance under the National Survivor Benefits Act (Anw) 
  • old age pension insurance under the National Old Age Pensions Act (AOW).
