If a child has lost both parents

Children up to 16 can get an Anw orphan's benefit if they have lost both parents. Orphans aged 16 to 21 can also qualify for an Anw orphan's benefit if they meet additional requirements.

Who is entitled to an orphan's benefit?

Children can get an Anw orphan's benefit if they have lost both parents. It makes no difference whether the child is a natural or adopted child.

A child can only receive an orphan's benefit if the parent who died last was insured under the Anw scheme. (People who live or work in the Netherlands are insured). Further information about this:

Children aged 16 to 21

Children aged from 16 to 21 can qualify for an orphan's benefit if they meet additional conditions. These conditions depend on their date of birth.

Orphan's benefit if one of the parents has died

In some cases, a child can get an orphan's benefit if one of the parents has died. This applies in the following cases:

  • if the mother has died and there is no legally established father, or
  • if one parent has died and the other parent was dismissed from parental authority before the death took place.
